~ Dedication and Service with a Heart & Soul for our Human Family!
Al Cole, Executive Director of the People of Distinction Humanitarian Awards, extends his heart-felt appreciation to US Congressman Rob Wittman for his inspiring speech at our 2016 People of Distinction Humanitarian Awards on Capitol Hill.
Rob Wittman was first elected to serve the First Congressional District of Virginia, America’s First District, in December of 2007. He was re-elected for his fourth full term in the House of Representatives in November 2014. For more than 20 years, Rob has served in several levels of government, from Montross Town Council to United States Congress. Rob is truly a representative for the people, he spends time at civic events listening to constituents, as well as traveling to dangerous areas in the world to get the ground truth on issues straight from the source. Rob’s passion shines clearly in his words, deeds and desire to create a brighter future for us all.
Rob is child of adoption who has always remembered his upbringing in the face of both successes and challenges. In April of 2015 Rob was the co-sponsor of the “Protecting Adopted Children Act” with the bipartisan support of Congressman Jim Langevin (D-RI) and Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-TX). “The Protecting Adopted Children Act” would provide more stable homes through pre-adoption and post-adoption services and strives to protect adopted children from being subjected to dangerous and unregulated situations. The bill also expands the scope of the pre-existing Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force under the jurisdiction of the Department of Justice to include combating the illegal transfer of children.
“Too many children today are falling victim to a system that lacks necessary oversight,” said Congressman Wittman. “As a child of adoption myself, I am personally invested in this issue. I’m proud to support this legislation today to reduce that risk in order to better help these children find stable, loving homes and to improve support services for adoptive parents.”
In the U.S. Congress, Rob serves on the House Armed Services Committee and is the Chairman of the Readiness Subcommittee. He has quickly earned a reputation for being an advocate for our men and women in uniform and for being a champion of the Chesapeake Bay. As a member of the House Committee on Natural Resources, Rob brings his professional expertise in water quality, fisheries, and other natural resource issues.
Prior to his election to Congress, Rob spent 26 years working in state government, most recently as Field Director for the Virginia Health Department’s Division of Shellfish Sanitation. He holds a Ph.D. in Public Policy and Administration from Virginia Commonwealth University, a Master of Public Health degree in Health Policy and Administration from the University of North Carolina, and a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Virginia Tech.
Rob’s wife, Kathryn, a teacher at Cople Elementary School in Hague, Virginia, is a Westmoreland County native whom he met when he spent high school and college summer recesses working in a Leedstown tomato cannery and on a Reedville fishing boat in the Northern Neck. They live in Montross and have two children: daughter Devon, son-in-law Daniel Gooch, son Josh, and daughter-in-law Tiffany. They also have three grandchildren, Morgan, Mark, and Macon.

Suicide is the #1 cause of death for police officers every year in America and there are currently 120,000 officers working every day with symptoms of PTSD.

~ 2016 Organizational Unsung Hero: VETERANS MOVING FORWARD ~ Making a Meaningful Difference in the Lives of Veterans!
Veterans Moving Forward has served our Nation’s veterans during the past six years by providing service dogs and canine therapy services to veterans with physical and mental health challenges at no cost to the veterans. Veterans Moving Forward “Stands Out” from other service dog organizations as VMF places service dogs anywhere in the continental U.S. with veterans of any age, generation, or military conflict, whether their health challenge(s) occurred as a result of military conflict, disease, or an injury occurring after their honorable service. Our “Vision” is to be a leading source of canine therapy and assistance dogs for veterans with physical or mental health challenges and to make a meaningful difference in the lives of these veterans, increasing their safety and independence within their homes and communities.
While there are many organizations providing assistance/service dogs to individuals of all ages with physical and mental health challenges, veterans are under-served. Support is needed for the visible, as well as the invisible, injuries. Today, there is a critical need for the use of therapy and service dogs in the rehabilitation of veterans with post-traumatic stress and traumatic brain injury, and with physical disabilities.
Since its founding on July 7, 2010, VMF has achieved the following successes:
- Placed service dogs with veterans from all four military services in six states
- Placed a facility dog at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune that serves active duty Marines alongside a licensed clinical social worker
- Provided canine therapy and comfort dog services in more than 23,000 individual and group engagements
VMF’s staff and volunteer team, many of whom are veterans or veteran family members, its dog raisers, and trainers, and dedicated healthcare and business professionals, know the veteran community. VMF’s customized matching and placement process focuses on the specific needs of each veteran, and VMF provides financial and training support until each veteran-service dog team passes the Public Access Test, enhancing the likelihood of success for each service dog placement. This program’s effectiveness is evidenced by VMF’s 100% service dog placement success rate. For more information, please visit our website: www.vetsfwd.org

~ 2016 Unsung Hero: GENE SAUNDERS ~ Founder of Project Lifesaver: The First Organization to apply Locating Technology for Search and Rescue of Individuals with Cognitive Disorders
Jarvis E. “Gene” Saunders, Jr. founded the Project Lifesaver program in October 1998, while serving with the Chesapeake, VA Police Dept., as a Captain commanding Special Operations and SWAT and Chief of SAR, Chesapeake Sheriff’s Office, when it became apparent to him there was a major void that needed to be filled. ~ 2016 Unsung Hero: DR. TED FATTOROSS ~ Healing and Strengthening Families and Communities within the FAMILY ALLIANCE FOUNDATION, now a Division of Donna Bell’s “Bringing Home America!”
This is a posthumous award to a wonderful, caring and enlightened man: Dr. Ted Fattoross!
Dr. Ted was an inspirational public speaker and CEO/Founder of The Family Alliance Foundation. Ginny Gutierrez, his inspiring and dedicated friend, was President of that great organization. The Family Alliance Foundation raised awareness and offered hope, inspiration and support to people around the world both on and off line -. from small school districts to corporate giants, from the classroom to the boardroom – on topics such as anti-bullying, character building education, personal and social development, fatherhood, parental involvement.
The extraordinary words of Dr. Ted Fattoross still ring out loudly and clearly even after his death, as Ted found himself caught in the web of false accusations, parent alienation and courts that he never dreamed he would find himself in. “Let us not sit idly by and watch the breakdown of our families and communities. As you go into our world of beauty and peril, follow your heart. At the core of a strong society are strong families…. Today, we witness with dismay and trepidation, the outbreak of school shootings, violence, bullying, substance abuse, suicides, teenage pregnancies, divorces, and spousal/ child abuse. We look to our government to pass laws to fix these problems only to realize that in the final analysis—we know what’s best for ourselves and our children. Our hope lies in the strength of our families and communities.”
Towards the end of Ted’s Life, he saw that the way to reform the effect that Family Court has upon struggling families, is to focus upon resolving generational patterns and issues that influence the choices that people make which lead to confusion and parental alienation that ends up in courts.
~ Let’s continue to keep the mission and awesome vision of Dr. Ted Fattoross in our hearts, in our everyday lives and in the depth of our inspired prayers. Always remember, that the shining guidance of Dr. Ted is still with us to help… as we also need your help. And with the outstanding work of Donna Bell and “Bringing Home America” at Dr. Ted’s side… we will beautifully and very lovingly continue to help serve each other!
