My name is Christian Spears and I live in The Rossville section of Staten Island. I am the founder of SIFT (Staten Island Friends Together), which is a recognized grassroots volunteer organization that formed immediately after Superstorm Sandy struck. Since October 29, 2012, SIFT has helped over 550 homeowners in Staten Island, Long Island, Brooklyn, New Jersey, and Oklahoma. It is our mission to help those recover after a storm and salvage what we can for homeowners. For the one year anniversary of Sandy, SIFT beautified the dead end of Manhattan Street in Tottenville to honor those who lost their lives on that tragic day. It was a successful project that took one week to complete and was funded by the Citizens Committee for NYC. Moving forward, SIFT will continue to work with 501c3 organizations and continue to network in order to make a positive difference when disaster strikes. I, Zelda Rosenberg, moved to Rockland County 1992 and in 1993 moved to Esther Gitlow Towers, a senior citizen high-rise where I still reside. At a meeting in our building I heard about the Foster Grandparent Program. I’ve happily been a Foster Grandparent ever since. I currently worked with up to four 3 year olds per school term. I give the children one-to-one help with subjects they’re having trouble with. The teacher advises who needs this help and what help is needed – such as recognizing letters, numbers, colors and counting, or reading to them.
It is wonderful to see the progress these children make. When I remember their problems in September and October and now in April, May and June I can see the progress and the confidence of the child. I can’t express the feeling I receive and I’m so happy for them.

Melissa Ann Maria Pettignano is a professional music artist, songwriter, author, entrepreneur, and inspirational speaker. She’s the founder and CEO of MPettignano Enterprises, LLC.
One of the biggest losses Melissa has had to deal with was losing her aunt, Arlene T. Babakitis on September 11, 2001. As a result, Melissa is very active in helping the 9-11 Community. Melissa frequents museums and helps the youth understand what that day of “911” was like and gives them insight on how they too can overcome anything they face, especially tragedy. Not just to the youth, but all ages.
Fox News interviewed both, Melissa and her mother, Evelyn Pettignano, for their Fox News Documentary in regards to the 10th year anniversary of September 11, 2001 for Bill O’Reilly’s, What’s Happening Now. Melissa and her mother shot a documentary film in New York City, “Forever Changed 911 in Remembrance” for ACLJ- American Center for Law and Justice. On June 20, 2013, Melissa and her family joined Points of Light in Washington D.C. to attend the America’s Sunday Supper with nine-time Grammy Award winner, John Legend.
In her hometown community, Melissa and her family are active in donating time and money to worthy causes and fundraisers. They recently worked closely with Secaucus Mayor Michael Gonnelli and the community to help fire victims who lost their homes, as well as donated cases of water for Hurricane Katrina victims at Secaucus High School. The Secret Sandy Claus Project began in the weeks leading up to Christmas. Michael “Sandy Claus” Sciaraffo decided to don a Santa suit and find children who lost their toys in the storm in the Rockaways, Brooklyn, Staten Island and some parts of New Jersey, wherever they may be. The goal was to match up each child with a toy they had lost or asked for Christmas from Santa.
By December 21st, 2012, the Secret Sandy Claus Project was featured in every newspaper around the world. The project had now garnered worldwide and national news media attention such as the Associated Press, CNN , ABC World News Tonight with Diane Sawyer, Fox News Channel, CBS National News and many other news outlets. The Secret Sandy Claus Project is officially an arm of America’s Disaster Relief organization. America’s Disaster Relief is a non-profit organization that is supported solely by grants, fund raisers and donations.

~ 2014 Unsung Hero: SISSY’S ANGELS ~ Helping To End Domestic Violence
Sissy’s Angels mission is to bring awareness to the growing domestic violence problem in our communities. To end domestic violence and help abused women, children and men.
Theresa Mapes, President of Sissy’s Angels, along with her husband John, lost their own daughter to domestic violence; her name was Simeonette, affectionately known as “Sissy”. Simeonette mentored many teens on post who missed there families, who had a drinking problem or who just needed a hug. She also help put on shows at the theater to help raise money for special dinners for the teen soldiers away from home for thanksgiving and Christmas.
Simeonette started a program called the Girls only club where the female students would meet and discuss anything they wanted . Simeonette also volunteered for FDNY in their run for Life. Simeonette also donated to animal rescues. As you can see Simeonette was a special New Yorker. She was an angel on earth and we as her family will continue her good works as Sissy’s Angels.
.~ 2014 Unsung Hero: MICHELLE THEURER ~ A New York Court Stenographer who helps out victims of Domestic Violence… helps wounded Veterans, helps out with Anti-Bullying, Diabetes & Muscular Dystrophy efforts too!
Michelle Theurer is amazing! She’s the essence of a natural born “Unsung Hero”. She makes her living as a New York Court Stenographer. She is a member of the New York State Court Reporters Association and the National Court Reporters Association. She was recently chosen as a VIP member of Covington Who’s Who 2014 Registry. Impressive stuff here… but this is only the beginning. In her already busy professional life, Michelle has still managed to find the time to reach out to help in diabetes efforts with the JDRF Research Foundation; to out in Anti-Bullying efforts with the New York City Art Cypher Group; to help out victims of Domestic Violence with her participation in Sissy’s Angels Inc; to help out wounded veterans with her participation in the Wounded Warriors Program; to offer her time to the Susan B. Koman Breast Walk and the Leisha Emons Breast Cancer Vaccine Fundraiser; and when she has time left over, contributes her efforts to the Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy Association!
HOW DOES SHE FIND THE TIME? In Michelle’s words: “People will time for the things that are really important to them. And the most important thing to me is helping others. We are all just passing through, when I arrive to the grave, I don’t wan to arrive in a well-preserved body, I want to arrive scratched up and screaming “Wooooo, what a ride!”
~ 2014 Unsung Hero: JAMES KLINE ~ James Kline is a dedicated at-home Dad, leader and inspiration for at-home Parenting
James Kline is the co-organizer of the Triangle Stay At-Home Dads group in Raleigh, NC. Though media exposure and promoting the “coolness factor” of staying-at-home for children, James was responsible for helping over 250 at-home dads provide daily playgroups for children and monthly dad events.
It is the mission of The National At-Home Dad Network, a 501c3 non-profit organization, to provide support, education and advocacy for great fathers who are the primary caregivers of their children. These at-home dads are proving everyday that the measure of a man is in the size of his heart. These at-home dads are changing society’s view of what a dad can be. Simply put, these at-home dads are changing the world!
Just as the PDHA believes that there are more POSITIVE things going on in our world than negative things, we also believe that there are more GREAT DADS in our world than dead beat dads.
